At each Solstice and Equinox we renew our intention to practice the Bodhisattva Vows and the Buddhist Precepts.
Bodhisattva is a sanskrit word. Bodhi means awake, and sattva means being. A bodhisattva is an awakening being who awakens for the benefit of all beings.
Buddhist monastics traditionally renew their vows every month on the full moon. The Full Moon Ceremony, or Bodhisattva Ceremony, is a ceremony of reflection and renewal of vows. At Ashland Zen Center we renew our vows four times a year on the solstice and equinox.
We reflect on our activities of body, speech and mind over the last season and to renew our intentions looking forward into the coming season.
The Bodhisattva Ceremony typically falls on the Wednesday closest to each Solstice and Equinox. Zazen begins at 7:10 pm followed by the ceremony at 7:40 pm. Check the calendar for dates.
Translation of the precepts as both prohibitory and clear-mind below is by Keido Les Kaye Roshi and Kobun Chino Roshi with calligraphy by Inja Vitero. Copies of this are available at Ashland Zen Center for a suggested donation of $5.
