2021 Summer Guest Student Program

Give yourself the gift of time in Zen community

The secret is just to say 'yes!' and jump off from here.

                                                                 — Suzuki Roshi

Living Zen at Ashland Zen Center is a half-day immersion program. Awaken with the wakeup bell in the morning. Make your way to the zendo where you will experience zazen and chanting with monks and a dedicated lay sangha. After bowing out in the zendo, follow the ringing sound of the umpan to the dining hall. Share a simple and delicious vegetarian breakfast prepared by the Tenzo, our head cook. On Sundays share a community potluck as part of the regular weekly schedule.

After breakfast enjoy some personal time, perhaps some coffee in the garden as the sun warms the air. At 9:00 a.m. the drum gathers us to the work circle, where you have the opportunity to bring zazen mind from the cushion into activity during samu (work practice). Work assignments are for all physical levels and abilities, and everyone is included. The tools used, attention paid to each task and care offered to each and every thing is an important part of our practice at Ashland Zen Center. Samu provides deep reflection and enriches our joy in taking care of ourselves and all things.

At the end of work period, a bell rings around the property. Work stops and tools are put away. Join everyone in the dining hall again for lunch at 12:00 p.m. and lively discussions of the day and dharma. Afternoons and evenings are free for personal choices. The Rogue Valley is rich in hiking trails and water sport adventures.

A simple dinner is provided in the dining hall from 5:00-6:00 pm. Any other food you wish to provide for yourself can be prepared in a full kitchen.

We look forward to welcoming you to Ashland Zen Center!
